Where and When We Started

Back in 1913, a Chicago Irishman by the name of Murphy started a dress suit rental business.
In those days, a big night out on the town meant dressing up. Since most folks couldn't afford to buy an expensive
suit or tuxedo, renting a "dress suit" to look "spiffy" was how a young man might impress the object of his intentions.
During the depression, the mood of the country changed, and by World War II the Company became known as Murphy Cap & Gown
Company. Along with a name change, the Company's product focus had shifted as well, to parochial school uniforms and
graduation caps and gowns. During the mid-1900's, manufacturing was expanded to include custom tailored choir and
pulpit attire. The 1970's brought refinement to the Company's product line, and a relocation of the main manufacturing
facility to St. Petersburg, Florida, where it exists today.
